Tartelette Amazonian Clay Matte Eyeshadow Palette Review

Why is an eyeshadow called eye-shadow? Similar to how you would contour a face to slenderize and accentuate bone structure, shadowing and highlighting around your eyes strategically can make them look bigger!

Tarte is a well known cosmetic company that borderlines on the not-so-clean spectrum of the toxicity scale. [EWG] But relative to other mainstream cosmetic brands, Tarte is one of the few that are intentional about using safer ingredients - formulating their products without "parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan, synthetic fragrances and gluten."

I had been keeping an eye out for an all encompassing eyes shadow palette in the clean beauty world and the Tartlette Amazonian Clay Matte Palette's dreamy hues caught my eye. This eyeshadow set retails at $40 and has twelve romantic shades in a pressed powder form with warm and cool tones conveniently at hand for a wide range of neutral and dramatic looks. On well-primed eyelids, the powder glides on smoothly and the colors are easily blendable without too much chalkiness.

Organized perfectly as a learning tool, the layout of the hues - arranged in rows for three easy looks - make it extremely simple to apply the eyeshadow. Just start on the left row, picking one of the lightest colors as a base and move to the right to add more depth and drama.

All twelve shades are matte, which may be off-putting for some, and I do love a glimmery glow once in a while, but I prefer to have more colors available in matte when it comes to an eyeshadow palette. I use the Tartelette in conjunction with Alima Pure's Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow in Chai to first lay down a gradient of beautiful color before adding a slight shimmer for effect. I've found that adding just a hint of dewy glimmer at the finish creates a more natural and elegant feel, bringing attention to all the right places instead of overwhelming the entire eyelid with glitter - which has the potential of looking unrefined and too youthful.

Also being matte, I appreciate this palette's usefulness in my make-up routine as I can use it to contour, highlight, define eyebrows, and to line my eyes! This compact, versatile, and mess-free eyeshadow set is my go-to palette for traveling.

I applied Alima Pure's Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow in the center of my top lash line and in the inner corners of my eyes for a satiny shimmer. This light reflective trick will bring more attention to your eyes!

My parting thoughts: there are cleaner options out there with slightly lower toxicity ratings such as Beautycounter's three new Velvet Eyeshadow Palettes and Mineral Fusion's Illuminating Powder. But overall, I enjoy using Tartelette on a more regular basis because of it's flattering and easily wearable colors, and also the availability of warm and cool hues all in one place. I give the Tartlette Amazonian Clay Matte Palette by Tarte 4 out of 5 stars for its useful versatility, buttery application, long lasting wear and portability. It's a winner!
